Barran is the captain of the Guard in Imardin, who managed to get the position at a young age - he is described as being in his mid-twenties. His father is Derril, his mother is Velia and he has a brother called Walin. He is a family friend of Lorlen. Barran had been working as a common guard, until he was promoted to Captain of the Guard.

Barran assists Lorlen with his investigations into finding a murderer. He is present in all of the Higher Magicians meetings about the murders, and tells Lorlen about every corpse the guard finds. It is the first time in which the corpses only had small wounds, which he doesn't quite understand, but tries his hardest to solve anyway. |
