Years later Farand overhears a conversation about releasing magic and so tries it himself, and it works. However none of them realised the consequences in doing so, and eventually Farand has to stay in his room as he accidentally looses magic. Dem Marane enlists the help of Ambassador Dannyl to teach Farand Control of his magic. Dannyl secretly aims to arrest Dem Marane, and his group of rebels and he takes as long as possible to teach Farand Control, in order to learn as much about the rebels as he can. When he nears the end of the control lessons, Dannyl's intentions are picked up by Farand and so the magician is forced to arrest Marane and the rebels then. Dannyl travels by ship with the rebels back to Kyralia to bring Farand to the Guild and be ready for the trial. On the journey, Farand reveals he knows of Dannyl's relationship with the scholar, Tayend of Tremmelin. But he promises to keep it secret. Farand is then poisoned, but Dannyl succeeds in saving him with Vinara's help. Back at the Guild, Farand is granted a place of study, even though he is several years older than the average novice. At the trial of the rebels, Marane is sentenced to execution, while most of the rest imprisoned. During the Ichani Invasion, Farand stays near Dannyl and helps with the fight. Later, after their magic is depleted, he helps Dannyl and Osen to dig Lorlen out from under a pile of debris. He then hides underground with most of the Guild magicians. |
