Healing is one of the three disciplines in the Black Magician trilogy, specifically known only by Guild Magicians in the Allied Lands. The healing discipline is denoted by green robes. Healing is more than curing wounds, they also learn about medicine and the body.

Healing Discipline

Healing is said to be the most complex of the three disiplines, as it takes a vast knowledge of biology to tap into this power, however all novices are given a basic understanding of how to do it, enough that they can heal most of their own ailments e.g. sores, illnesses and muscular pain, and be trusted to help and heal in Sonea's Hospice. Healing is gradual, and can only take place via skin-to-skin contact, and usually with the agreement of the person being healed as their natural magical protection can act as a barrier.

Continuous healing

Healing can also be used by Magician on themselves, this continuous healing allow Magician a much longer lifespan than those without magic and as suggested in 'The Ambassadors's Mission' used to fight off illness to the point that Lord Lorkin had to be explained to, by his mother Sonea, that the feelings he had after a break up 'was the clostest that non-magicians came to knowing what it felt like for non-magician to be sick'. Continuous healing is referred continually throughout all the books.

Behavioural healing

In 'The Novice' it is releaved by Lord Dannyl, who has been using his magic and knownleage of healing to surpress with great effect, his feeling of sexual desire for men. However doing so comes at the price of him having no libido or sexual feeling at all, showing that no-one can truly control their desires, or heal what isn't broken. This is also seen in 'The Ambassadors's Mission' when Sonea trys to heal a man's addiction to a foreign, highly addictive drug called 'Rot', while she is able to heal the withdrawal symptoms, she is unable to heal his desire for the drugs relaxing effects, as he still has the memory of what the drug can do and make him feel.

Treatmeant

Healers within Sonea’s hospice don't just use magic to cure aliments, as this would be inefficient at the cost of magic, they also support medicine and surgery when it is appropriate to do so.

Trivia

At the beginning of The Magician's Guild Lady Vinara is Head of Healing.
