As a younger child, Imi finds a secret pipe room connected to one of her rooms. She frequents the room when she wants to hear the gossip of the city. She uses the room to find out more about the 'White Lady' who visited the city, and accidentally overhears merchants talking about large Sea Bells. Thinking it would be a great present for her father's birthday, she begins to find a way of getting one. Planning an escape with another Elai child, she evades her aunt by taking a secret passage from a pool to the out of the city. There they head to where the Sea Bells are supposed to be found. A ship which is also after the Bells turns up, catching Imi, and forces her to harvest Bells for them. When she is done, they take her with them to a port where she is sold to a wealthy man. Slowly dehydrating after only having access to freshwater, another man turns up to try and heal her. He tells Imi that he'll help her, and contacts the Voices for help. Imenja and Reivan rescue and befriend her, and once she is healthy enough, take her home. During her stay at the Sanctuary in Glymma, she meets with Nekaun who explains what has happened, and treats her as a special guest. When they reach the Si coast, Imi leaves the boat to ask the Siyee for directions to Borra. After spending the night, she returns to the boat, and they head to Borra. Imi heads straight to her father and eventually persuades him to meet with the Pentadrians on one of the islands. There they give Imi presents and suggest an alliance. Reluctantly, he agrees on behalf of Imi. |
