Tagin had been an apprentice magician for over two years but, like with most of his obsessions, he had grown impatient with his training and teacher. However, if he ended his apprenticeship, rather than remaining until his master taught him Higher Magic and granted him independence, he would not receive income from the King, or attract work from the Houses. In secret, Tagin learned Higher Magic and began taking magical strength from the servants of the residence. Once strong enough, he turned on his master and killed Herrol and most of his servants. Tagin then visited his sister Indria and told her of his deed. Indria is visited by Lord Arfon and two other magicians who are after Tagin, revealing his crimes; first in learning higher magic before being granted independence by his master, second in applying it to commoners to strengthen himself, and third in using it to kill. |

Tagin's actions caused the Guild to ban Black Magic and remove all knowledge of it from all books, except the record of the event, which was hidden away. Lord Coren came across the stash of books and rehid it, to be found later by Akkarin who also shared it with Sonea. |
