The Mad Apprentice follows the story of Lord Tagin, and his sister, Lady Indria. It narrates how he learnt Black Magic without the approval of his mentor, who he later killed. As the story develops, Tagin starts killing every magician who tried to stop him, along with many non-magicians and animals alike. It is also narrated from the viewpoints of Gilken, the Guild's Record Keeper and Arfon, one of the magicians looking for Tagin.
It was included in Legends of Australian Fantasy and it tells the story of how Black Magic was banned in the Guild. This novella isn't sold separately, it is currently only found in Legends of Australian Fantasy and in Epic Legends of Fantasy.
