Valhan, was an extremely powerful sorcerer and the ruler of worlds. He grew up in his world's ruling class, where he made most of the mistakes from which he learned from. He was the successor of Roporien whom he killed for the position.

Valhan worked tirelessly to keep the worlds in check, and made laws against traveling between worlds, teaching people to travel between worlds, and pattern shifting.

Personality

Valhan did not show emotion, and kept most of his thoughts to himself. Because of his power, no-one could read his mind.

He was coldly practical, and did not hesitate to kill.

Spoilers from "Thief's Magic"

Valhan was the angel who gave Rielle a new life. The reasons behind this are only later explained in Angel of Storms: Spoilers from "Angel of Storms" Prior to the events this book, Valhan was trapped in a dead world by a rebel. Valhan pretended to be an angel while in this world to stop people from using the magic he required to leave. While in this role as an angel, he killed several corrupt priests in the mountain temple. At the end of the book, Rielle, a tainted from Fyre was brought before him. In his role as an angel, Valhan "gave her a new life", ordering her to go far from home and set up a new life on the other side of the planet.

Spoilers from "Angel Of Storms"

After 20 cycles in the dead world, Valhan has enough magic to leave. He offers for Rielle to join him in his palace as an artisan in his world. He leaves Rielle with Inekera while he goes to check on his world. Inekera finds that Rielle is powerful enough to be a threat and asks Valhan if he wants her to kill her; he agrees. While restoring his authority as ruler of the worlds (after being trapped for 20 cycles), he is approached by Tyen Ironsmelter who asks for him to restore Vella. He agrees, on the price that Tyen spies on a group of rebels for him. While experimenting on methods to restore Vella, he comes across an interesting use of pattern shifting: Copying someones consciousness onto another body. He finds that Rielle (who he believes is equal in strength) was still alive, and offers to bring her to his palace to learn magic and art. He strategically commits suicide during a rebellion against him, planning on having Rielle bring him back to life. This does not work out, (as Rielle realizes the body he was to be reprinted on was not blank, and she refuses to kill anyone).
