Velend accompanies Tayend of Tremmelin to Bel Arralade's birthday party in the Novice.

Ambassador Dannyl describes him as muscled, and takes an immediate dislike to the man once they have a conversation. He claims Velend reminds him of Fergun; because of his attitude as well as his interest in sword training.
It is heavily implied that Velend has a romantic interest in Tayend, when he starts spending time in The Great Library where Tayend works.
